Robyn Peterson —

Adult Community Education (ACE) courses are offered for former refugee and migrant learners at Hagley.

Have you ever been to another country and walked into the market only to realise that it’s just NOT THE SAME as home? The food is packaged differently, you only recognise half the fruit and vegetables, and you don’t know how to cook them once you’ve got them! Our ESOL cooking class has been running at Hagley for over 10 years now, with learners making a wide variety of dishes – from cakes and cookies to chutney and dinner dishes. Learners use seasonal fruit and vegetables and also work on budgeting for their grocery shopping. This class runs on Wednesdays from 3.30pm-5.30pm.

Other courses we offer at Hagley include our ESOL sewing class (Tuesdays 3.30-5.30pm), ESOL Learner Driver Licence (Mondays and Wednesdays 3.00-5.00pm) and at Champion Street we run ESOL computing for beginners (Thursdays 1.00-3.00pm) and a Conversation class (Tuesdays 1.00-3.00pm). A new ACE class starting this term at Champion Street is Poi making and Waiata for our ESOL learners.

Razia, from our Learner Driver Licence class, recently came back to show the class that she had passed her learners licence – very exciting! Not only does this allow her to start working towards her Restricted Driver Licence, but it provides a form of identity which can be used to open a bank account or when applying for further study or work.

We are very proud of all those who come along to our ACE courses to learn the skills they need to settle into and be a vital part of the NZ way of life.
