Understanding NCEA and Literacy and Numeracy Exams

Hayden Shaw —

This year we have seen some changes made to the way NCEA works.

One of the changes is how students gain Literacy and Numeracy. Students must have Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy to be able to gain an NCEA qualification. During weeks 4 and 5 of this term we have seen many students from Year 10 up to Year 13 sitting the Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy exams. The exams are not the only way a student can gain their Level 1 Literacy and or Numeracy - the other way of gaining it is by achieving standards that are mainly in English and Maths that are tagged with either Literacy or Numeracy. The important thing to note is that the credits that a student gains from passing Literacy and/or Numeracy do not count towards the 60 credits they need to pass their NCEA qualification. See the image above.

It is also that time of year when our senior students will be getting back results from work they have completed over the first term of the year. Please check in with your child as to how they are going in their different courses. Ask what their recent results have been and to see what their personal assessment calendar looks like for this term. This can be accessed by students when they click on the MY LEARNING tile on the Hagley Student Portal. Helping students with their time management can be a good way to support them at school.

If you want to know more about NCEA and how it works, or you want to get some tips on how to help you child at home with their learning in the seniors years, we will be running some sessions in the coming weeks at school. Please keep your eye out for more information regarding these.
