The Festival of Adult Learning

Robyn Peterson —

Have you heard about the Festival of Adult Learning? Across Aotearoa New Zealand there are thousands of opportunities to take part in adult learning of all shapes and sizes, with around half a million adult New Zealanders participating.

Hagley Adult Literacy Centre (HALC) runs some of these – Cooking, Sewing, Barista, Drivers Licence, Computing and Volunteering – at their satellite campus in Edgeware and at Hagley College. You are welcome to come along and join in.

During the Festival week in early September, HALC learners from across our 30 classes made dishes and contributed a recipe to create our ‘Recipes from around the world’ recipe book. This turned out to be an excellent way to practice reading, mathematics and, shall we say, testing the end products! Many classes took time out to visit the gardens, see the spring daffodils and visit the cafe. We were pleased to present Jo Geary, a much-admired ACE tutor, with the 2022 ‘Outstanding Tutor’ award. You’ll see some of Jo’s cooking class recipes in the recipe book 😊

HALC was thrilled to receive an ‘Innovative Provider’ award from ACE Aotearoa to acknowledge our contributions to adult learning in Christchurch Ōtautahi.

Anton Matthews, the owner of “FUSH” and champion of Te Reo Māori, was guest speaker for the evening. Anton brought along his mobile fish and chip shop, The FUSH waka, and provided a delicious dinner for us all.
