Hagley Theatre Company

Lisa Allan —

It has been a hugely creative term here at Hagley Theatre Company.

In amongst our regular schedule of theatre and film studies, we have had visiting tutors come and share their specialities with us. Pedro Ilgenfritz traveled down from Unitec in Auckland to share his knowledge of mask work over a very rich two days, and we are lucky to be receiving Toi Whakaari's Grace Hoete next week, a past HTC student! Cameron Mattox used his superpower of sleuthing out fantastic contemporary scripts to bring Duck Duck Goose by a young Irish playwright, Caitríona Daly, to the Open Stage Studios.

A few words from our audiences included "Captivating!" "Surprising!" "Intriguing!" and "Amazing!" The work was challenging and presented with integrity. The season ended with a visit from Cashmere High School who stayed after the show to engage in a question-and-answer session with our students.

Brendon Bennetts took up the role of director to bring to the stage a uniquely Aotearoa NZ story, The Engine Room  by Ralph McCubbin Howell.

This season was sadly cut short due to a few key members of the cast isolating, but those who came along to the first three performances very much enjoyed the efforts of our creatives.

In Term 3, keep an eye out for our very popular Scene Plus season, complete with delicious platters of food, and Hagley for a Day, wherein prospective 2023 HTC students can come along and try out a day in the life of a full-time performing arts student! See more at www.hagleytheatreco.co.nz
