Tertiary Pathways study options

Emma Lumb —

For those thinking of studying at tertiary level in 2023 we have a number of programmes with a Semester 2 intake coming up:

Academic writing and study skills (TRNS001) course beginning Tuesday, 28th June. Classes are during the day on Tuesdays and Fridays at Hagley College.

If you are wanting to develop skills and confidence in reading and writing for tertiary study but do not want to undertake a full-time preparation course, Hagley’s paper may be the right option for you. The course offers an introduction to tertiary study including familiarisation with UC learning systems: Hagley 001 students have access to UC library resources and we use UC Ako Learn as our online platform, giving an opportunity to gain the skills and familiarisation with university systems without having to use any of your tertiary fees-free entitlement or student loan.

For students intending to enrol in the University of Canterbury’s Certificate in University Preparation, you can opt to do this paper (TRNS001) with us, gain UC credit transfer for the course, and then complete the full certificate at UC at a later date.

Numeracy for Engineering & Physical Sciences (13EPS) runs on Tuesday evenings, 6.30-8.30pm. Our Semester 2 intake beings on Tuesday 28th June.

This half-year course prepares you for the Certificate in University Preparation (CUP) mathematics course TRNS007 Mathematics, which leads into an Engineering or Science degree.

FastPath into Engineering and Product Design: A 3-stage pathway preparing you for study.

For those over 20 years of age looking to start first year Engineering or Product Design at UC in Semester 1 2023, we offer a three-stage course in collaboration with the university.

Stage 1 classes are in our After 3 programme, with this year’s course running 22nd June - 4th November. This course has a features a blend of online and face-to-face delivery, and includes visits to UC to meet teachers from Stage 2, the UC Transitions programme:

Pre-UC Mathematics course (Tuesdays 6-9pm, from 28th June)

Pre-UC Physics and Maths integrated course (Wednesdays 5-9pm, from 22nd June. 2 hours additional online)

The pre-requisite for FastPath is NCEA Level 1 Math, with algebra fundamentals.

Stage 2 involves courses at UC with the Transitions programme from November 7th, and is followed by Stage 3 in February 2023 where student advisors in the UC College of Engineering will design a customised first year course of study based on your Stage 1 and 2 performance and your future aspirations. There are a range of engineering and product design disciplines to choose from. Work experience will be taken into account.

Catch Up College

We have now moved to our longer-term ‘through the year’ Catch Up, with individualised programmes designed around students’ NCEA course entry or qualification requirements. We have dedicated Catch Up classes in English and Mathematics running through the year, and beyond this we arrange where possible for students to join Senior College classes in the subjects that they require.

We would love to hear from you!

If you have any queries or know of someone who may benefit from any of these courses, please contact transitionsteam@hagley.school.nz
