My Learning Why - Tōku Akoranga, he aha āi

Robyn Peterson —

We’ve been celebrating at Hagley Adult Literacy Centre lately!

September heralds the Festival of Adult Learning and this year the focus has been on the reason why we learn. Learners from all around Christchurch recorded these clips and they are featured on the facebook page ‘My learning why’ – you can listen to them here: https://fb.watch/n24R1EMBhI/

All of our learners work hard on achieving their goals – for some, this is getting their NCEA Level 1, and for others it is developing their everyday English so that they can be active and happy in the community. Here is a small snapshot of learning from HALC classes across Christchurch:

  • In Edgeware, our Elementary class visited the Māori gardens sited in the Botanical Gardens, to look at the traditional plants which are used for healing.
  • Our Workplace student, Steve, achieved his goal and passed his Class 2 Truck Licence theory test. He can now go on to sit his practical and get out on the roads – keep an eye out for him!
  • Mark and Elly gave a mini concert on the ocarina and ukelele, playing songs to our class in Papanui.
  • Our Wigram class headed to the airport for a visit, travelling on a bus driven by the youngest bus driver in Christchurch!
  • In Rowley, our Literacy Pathways class used their measurement skills, weighing out the ingredients to make pikelets. Of course, they had to test the end result to see if they had been successful!

And finally, in addition to celebrating with chocolate cake 😊 all our learners received a tote bag, to bring their classwork to and from class. You’re bound to see these bags somewhere in Christchurch these holidays – and you’ll know those using them are our learners!
