Changes to NCEA Levels 1, 2, 3 and University Entrance for 2022

Marie Stribling —

As a result of interrupted learning time for ākonga in 2022, NZQA have again announced changes to the requirements for NCEA certificates and UE awards in 2022.

NZQA have put together a schedule of support for ākonga which includes Learning Recognition Credits, changes in endorsement requirements, changes regarding UE requirements and submission date extensions for some externally assessed portfolios.

  1. In 2022 students will be entitled to 1 Learning Recognition Credit (LRC) for every 5 credits earned through assessment in 2022, up to a maximum of 10 credits for Level 1 and 8 credits for Levels 2 and 3.
  2. With regard to Certificate Endorsements in 2022: Students will need 46 credits at Merit or Excellence level, instead of the usual 50 credits.
  3. To be awarded University Entrance in 2022, ākonga will need 14 credits in each of two UE approved subjects, and 12 credits in a third approved subject. (They will also need to attain Level 3 NCEA and meet the regular literacy and numeracy requirements.)
  4. There have also been some extensions of one week to the dates for some (not all) externally assessed portfolios. This applies to Technology and DVC Levels 1-3 portfolios.

Our main message to ākonga and whānau is to be aware of the supports that are in place, and to get in touch with the student’s tutor at the earliest opportunity if you have concerns about progress towards the end goal. There are still 10 weeks to go before externals begin and a lot can be achieved in that time.
