100 years of history

Jenni Holden —

Today we marked the 100 year anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the main building at Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College.

You can see this foundation stone on the end of the main block by the tunnel. We enjoyed a celebratory morning tea with invited guests, including current students from each year level, former students from the Hagley-West Association, Board members, support staff and teaching staff.

The Hagley-West Association (formerly known as the Westonians) have careful and detailed records of the school's long history. We are 165 years old this year. Here's a brief version:

  • 1858-1863 – ‘Boys Academy’
  • 1864-1873 – Christchurch High School
  • 1874-1882 – Christchurch West Borough School
  • 1883-1903 – West Christchurch School
  • 1904-1935 – West Christchurch District High School
  • 1906-1965 – Christchurch Technical College
  • 1936-1965 – Christchurch West High School
  • 1966-1991 – Hagley High School - an amalgamation of Christchurch West High School & Christchurch Technical College
  • 1992-2021 – Hagley Community College
  • 2022-         –  Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College
