Guidance and Counselling

Michael Gilchrist —

Hagley recognises the importance of sound mental health as the foundation for success in many aspects of life. Accordingly, we take wellbeing seriously and offer services to the Hagley community to support them as best we can.

Our team consists of four counsellors, an administrator, and a mental health advisor and social worker (newly appointed) who share our school with Ao Tawhiti, Christchurch East and Te Pā o Rākaihautū primary schools. Our main business is to provide counselling, mental health assessment when needed, liaising with students, teachers, and families, and referring students to outside agencies if appropriate. Our philosophy is one of genuine listening, acceptance, no judgments, and support. We treat all issues confidentially and with respect, and it is hard to shock us. So, if you feel someone you know is vulnerable and needing support, please contact us.

We receive self-referrals, as well as referrals from concerned friends, parents and caregivers, and teachers and other staff.

If you would like to access our services, we are based at Simpson House on the south side of the school. We can be contacted by dropping in, phoning the school, or emailing from the school website
