Matariki

Te Puru School - September 11, 2022

Each year, Te Puru School celebrates Matariki in a magical way. For two weeks surrounding Matariki, we have whānau activities during learning time.

Here the children rotate around different learning activities which can include activities such as whai, weaving, Maori art, te Rākau, Ki-o-Rahi, etc.

At the end of our celebration we hold an annual hangi. Whānau are able to meet before sunrise and share in the karakia before the hangi is laid. We look for the Matariki star cluster and have been fortunate to see it on occasion. We then celebrate the day with kite flying on the beach and end it with our community in a shared Hangi feast.

These activities are designed to immerse our tamariki in the Matariki traditions and build upon our school values.
