Class 4 Kāpiti Island Trip

Class 4 —

A stunning autumn day for this trip into nature and history! Below are some excerpts from the children's writing.

On the 23rd of May 2023 we went to Kāpiti Island Nature Reserve. They had whale pots and toilets!

Yesterday my class went to Kāpiti Island. On the boat ride we saw common dolphins. We stopped at the hihi feeding station for morning tea. We saw lots of coold birds. I saw lots of weka. When we reached the top we had lunch. The view was amazing!

When we first came to Paraparaumu Beach we had to do a biosecurity check. Then when we went off the boat, our guide Hemi talked to us about the land and birds and gave us some interesting facts about it. A fact I learned about Kāpiti Island was that an acre of the land is still owned by the original people. Another fact I learnt was that geckoes pop out of their skin.

Yesterday we went to Kāpiti Island. It was fun. It was a long walk. It took us two hours to get to the top, and it took about 40 minutes to get down. I saw a falcon. It was cool but it was not hunting.

The boat ride was also fun. On the way we saw dolphins.

Did you know that Kāpiti Island once was a big farm? They burnt down trees but in 1870 they turned it into a reserve but it was not until 1998 when they got the predators off.

When we got to the top the view was cool. We saw the currents moving. It was very cool.

I went to Kāpiti Island yesterday with my class. We walked on the Wilkonson track. We stopped for morning tea at the bird feeding station. We carried on walking, it was tiring. At least my dad was with me, it made it a lot easier!

My dad is so nice, he always lets me go to his work with him. He works really hard and he has never been on a school trip so it was very special to go. He has never been to Kāpiti Island. It was fun. I have been once before, but now I have been twice. It was awesome. I loved it.
