Book Day

Last week on Friday we had Book Day at Te Rā! This was a student initiated event and it was a big success. We will definitely look at making it an annual event!

Bodhi in Class 7 brought this as a proposal last term and the teachers gave unanimous support. A bit later, a group of Class 5 students wrote to me with a similar idea - so obviously the right time for something like this to happen.

The day started with lots of amazing costumes and characters coming in to school. Harry Potter characters were probably the most popular, but it was amazing to see such a diverse range  - I learned about a few books I hadn't even heard of before!

From the staff, Sharon (as Professor Trelwaney) and Cat (the Witch in the Cherry Tree) stood out. If we'd had a staff prize for best costume they would have claimed it - narrowly shading Buck as Bilbo Baggins.

The classes paraded to the hall for assembly and it was great to see so many parents watching this part of the day. In the assembly Bodhi read to the school (Hairy Maclary) and we celebrated many of the costumes and books represented on the day.

Later in the day the classes all had a chance to take two books home. Such a great way to keep the books cycling around and being enjoyed by new readers!

A big thank you to Bodhi for having the vision and energy to bring this to life! Also to Koru and Archie, Elsie, Elsa and Lola for their help on the day. Thank you too for the support you all gave as whānau - we had heaps of books and some of those costumes looked like they took serious skill and effort!

We made $159.40 from the gold coins to buy something extra for the library. Buck will talk with the organisers and we'll do this soon.

Ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa mo tō tautoko!

Ngā mihi nā
