Celebrating our GLS Swim Team

Dion Orbell —

The Grey Lynn swim team made up of Year 5 and Year 6 students swam in the Auckland Swim League competition during Term 2 and Term 3.

The children swam in four race meets in each term made up of 25m Freestyle, Freestyle relay, Backstroke relay, 25m Breast Stroke,25m Butterfly, Mixed Medley relay made up of each stroke, a 50m freestyle and a mega relay made up of eight swimmers swimming 25m freestyle.

There where many exciting races over the two terms and great swims by all of the swimmers. The Year 5 team winning the freestyle relay at the last meet (only lost this race once all season) and taking second in the medley relay. The Year 6 team won the medley race as well.

In Term 2 the team finished 4th out of nine teams. The team competed against Westmere A & B, Ponsonby A & B, Three Kings, Balmoral, Maungawhau, Richmond Rd and after an amazing session in the last meet moved up to come 4th.

This year's team was made up of the following Year 5 students: Erika Orbell, Sofia Beatson-Smith,  Annabelle Hegan, Ruby Jones, Logan Gourdie, William Hall, Julius Bowen and Year 6 students: Clarisse Purdon, Anya Taylor, Ila Patel, Evie Wilson, Alba Erikson, Sam Coulter, Jake Criscillo, Noah Fa'alogo-Lilo, Luca and Rhys Keenan.

The team had many memorable performances individually throughout the season and too numerous to mention. Everyone on the team swam hard and had a lot of fun. The chants of “Grey Lynn” in the last mega relay race are still echoing at the pool. At the team celebration, afterward observing the pizza and ice cream being inhaled was also very impressive!

Thanks to the parents that helped with timekeeping and always ensured the kids made it to the pool. Also big thanks to supporters, grandparents and extended family members for cheering the team on at every meet.
