Alicia Whata —

We believe that we all have opportunities to impact on the world; each day we have an influence on all people around us, our families, colleagues, those who provide us with goods or services. We are all ‘Learning today to shape tomorrow’ and our influence each day matters.

At Grey Lynn School our PRIDE values form the heartbeat of this influence.

Our Kaiako; our teachers have placed much emphasis and are continually working on highlighting these values in our school. Since 2016 Grey Lynn School Staff have been on a journey of professional learning to strengthen such an approach of focusing on the positive behaviours and values we want to see in action, through our development of PB4L: Positive Behaviour for Learning. These ideas have been aligned with our school values of PRIDE to form what we call here; ‘Our Grey Lynn Way’. It is a process for teaching social and behavioural skills and helps students to develop a positive, proactive, and systematic approach based on our own school data.

Recently we have come together as a team of teachers to analyse our school picture of trending behaviours and plan for deliberate teaching action in each space with a focus on age and stage appropriateness to teach the positive we want to see according to our areas of need. We have also noted trends happening in our playground that we would like to improve upon.

This process of ongoing analysis, action and reflection is part of our school’s self-review of continuous improvement. This process will happen each term as a school and we plan to share our focus each time with you as families; our partners in learning; so you too can be part of the learning conversation with your children about these positive and impactful behaviours.

This process models that Grey Lynn School staff, students and families are committed to our goals of Learning AKO, Collaboration MAHI TAHI and being Future Focused - TE AO HURIHURI. That we are all stretching ourselves each and every day to have this impact.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Jane Goodall
