Week 6 - Bring on the learning revolution - Ideas worth spreading

Toni Jarmin —

We are currently on a school wide learning journey that will see us develop classrooms into flexible learning spaces also referred to as Modern Learning Environments (MLEs). It's an exciting project as we strive to provide learning environments more conducive to the needs of 21st century learners.

Education has changed markedly over the last 5-10 years, and “looks very different” from when we were at school.   To thrive in this changing world, our children need to know how to access knowledge, communicate well, be creative thinkers and collaborate.

Children learn in different ways and therefore the traditional way that we have approached teaching and learning has to adapt as well. Turning the model around requires a complete rethink on teaching styles and breaking down the mental models of how kids learn, and how parents think they learn. If we value our learners we must value their learning styles and provide learning spaces that complement the learning.

This relates to our commitment to our school vision – teaching and learning is authentic , purposeful and personalised. We take risks, we see mistakes as an opportunity to learn, we are able to show resilience. Our children know why they are learning and we equip them for the future, as 21st Century learners.

 What is it all about?

Modern Learning is about learner agency, developing capabilities and relationships between learners and their teachers.

Modern Learning...

  • promotes learning that is personalised and student centred
  • learning that is engaging, authentic and connected to the real world
  • utilising ICT for learning
  • working together - collaboration
  • develops confident, creative, and innovative learners

What are Modern Learning Environments (MLE)

Modern Learning Environments are digitally connected, flexible spaces that allow teachers to tailor learning for small or large groups.

They include open areas for collaborative learning and quiet spaces for independent learning, as well as technology, media, arts, resource and reading spaces.

MLE designs meet special standards for acoustics, lighting, ventilation and heating.

Our evolving plan ...The Totara team (Year 5/6) are incorporating  MLE teaching and learning practices into  their current learning environments, exploring collaboration and increasing children's involvement in their own learning (self management).

Our new buildings create spaces which support and enhance the best teaching and learning for the 21st Century. We will continue to keep you updated with our journey.

Journeys are completed a step at a time!
