Kia ora koutou

Alicia Whata —

Grey Lynn School is proud of of its rich and diverse history past. Some of these stories will be reflected in our School Production which will be shared with you at the end of the term.

In conjunction with this school focus, Grey Lynn School has been gifted our bilingual school name of: Te Rae O Kawharu (The Brow of Kawharu) by our respected local Kaumatua; Taura Eruera. Taura has spent considerable time and effort in determining our name by using a process which required much research, conversations with local Ngati Whatua connections and our Grey Lynn School story to determine the name fitting for our place, our students and our community. We are humbled by Taura’s generosity of time and talents to allow our school to recognise our Tangata Whenua and associated histories in our school name. Nga mihi mahana kia koe Taura.

The name Te Rae O Kawharu recognises the local legend of the ancestor Kawharu and the ridge on which Grey Lynn School is situated. As for the remainder of the story, I will have to leave you in suspense as our production will tell its own story.
