Puriri Learning in Action update

Grey Lynn School —

Puriri Team thank you for your wonderful turn out to our school Athletics and assisting us with walking to and from the park.

We are really proud of our students and the way that everyone participated using their PRIDE values. Now that we have finished our athletics training we will be learning Zumba. You might like to have a go at this at home, we are sure that your child could show you a few moves! As soon as the weather is warm enough we will let you know so that we can get some swimming sessions in before the end of the year.

Room Six and Seven had a fantastic trip to the Auckland Art Gallery. We were in awe of the talent and found out about symbols in paintings from 400 years ago, abstract and modern art that tells a story. We were really proud of our students and the way they represented our school with their excellent behaviour and deep thinking questions. The Auckland Art Gallery is a great place to visit as a whanau too.

Surrey One will be going on a trip to see The Wizard of Oz where they will experience their learning about narratives in action. They have learnt about both traditional tales and modern narratives. We all have stories to tell, through the arts or in writing. We are sure you will hear all about how they are connected when you talk to Surrey One learners.

Rooms 6 and 7 will be walking to the Grey Lynn Fire Station late in the term and hearing all about how these people keep our community safe. We send a special thank you to Jaime for offering us this amazing learning opportunity. We love learning from our school whanau and especially about our local community.

Our literacy focus will continue to be growing skills and a passion for being readers and writers. You can support your child by spending time with them writing messages to family members, sharing a favourite story from your childhood or helping them discover a new author. The Auckland Public Library offers a ‘Dare to Explore’ summer reading challenge every year that is well worth being involved in. Get along to a local library to sign up.

In mathematics all classes will be focussed on ‘time’ and you can support at home by talking about all the different vocabulary we have to describe time. Think about days of the week, seasons, months, parts of the day and night, minutes and hours in analogue and digital format and other time based words like yesterday, tomorrow, last week etc.

Our main event to look forward to is the 6 December school celebration. We are honoured to have been part of your child’s life and send a genuine, heartfelt thank you to each whanau who has worked to support us in our work at school. As we draw towards the end of the year there is a time for reflection and festivity before we head off into our holidays. We will spend some time in class looking at the progress we have made by comparing our early in the year work to what we can do now and sharing our moments we are proud of with one another. Being positive is an important part of our school PRIDE, you may wish to do the same at home and voice things that you notice your child has progressed in over this year.

In the last week of term we will work together to prepare our spaces for the end of the year and visit new spaces so that your child goes into the holidays with confidence, looking forward to 2020.
