Maths - Fractions and Equal Sharing - Pukeko (Year 2)
For our Mathematics unit this term, we have been learning about fractions. In this unit students explore equal partitioning of objects and sets, and how to name the parts they create using fractions.
The easiest partitions are those related to halving and quarters since symmetry can be used. In this unit we apply three criteria when evaluating students’ capacity to partition an object or set into fractional parts: the correct number of parts is created, the shares are equal, the fraction is identified, and the whole is exhausted (used up).
We used a range of activities to focus on the key learning above. We created cookies and pizza by creating fractions from the whole shape and dividing the set of toppings into equal parts onto each piece (Ngātahi). We also looked at how we can arrange parts of the set in groups on each fraction to be more efficient rather than placing them on one-to-one (Ako).
