Mathematical Minds - Toroa

Bex Osborn —

This term Toroa students are being exposed to maths integrated in a wide variety of curriculum areas, giving them an understanding of how math is everywhere and how we can all be mathematicians!

During our Wednesday and Friday lessons at school terrific teachers in Toroa are exposing the students to a wide variety of mathematical lessons, that show math is not just about numbers on a page.

Friday saw the arrival of a variety of wild animals into the school grounds, through the wonders of augmented reality.  Their task was to use a student's height as a guide to figuring out the dimensions of their chosen animal.  They then needed to take this knowledge, and design a 3D habitat that could house this animal.  Once sketched out in their books, they then figured out the area and perimeter of the habitat and drew it to scale on isometric dot paper.

During this time students also learnt about nets and parts of 3D shapes, how to convert measurements during baking to increase and decrease quantities needed and how to use isometric paper to draw 3D shapes from a variety of views.

On Wednesday we have continued our mathematical learning, but this time through an art lens.  Students have selected a geometric image of a chosen animal and are in the process of measuring each individual length as well as a range of angles.  As we move through the unit this term, the students will start to create their own geometric piece of art based off this image, using bamboo skewers, hot glue and an extreme amount of patience and precision!

It is fantastic to see the students enjoying their learning and engaging in mathematical talk without even realising!
