Neurodiversity Celebration Week
We are all wired differently and having a strong understanding of this leads to acceptance
At Marshland School, we recently embraced Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a global initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. This week provided an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the unique strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals within our school environment. This has been a great opportunity for the akōnga and Kaiako to show Ngātahi (togetherness) as we celebrated our differences together.
Last week, the students looked at success stories and discussed famous individuals who are neurodiverse such as;
Emma Watson: Has been open about her experiences with ADHD, demonstrating how neurodivergence can coexist with remarkable achievements.
Greta Thunberg: Has shared her journey with autism and OCD, highlighting how her neurodivergence has fueled her passion for environmental advocacy.
Dav Pilkley: The author of captain underpants and dog man states that he has his own super powers “ADHD and dyslexia”.
It was powerful for akōnga to see that someone like them has achieved so highly in their respective fields. This gave many akōnga a sense of self belief and excitement. Although neurodiversity celebration week is coming to an end, Marshland School remains committed to recognising and celebrating each student's diversity.
