Cultural Partnership Term 3
The cultural partnership team consists of Taryn Kerin, Nora Harrison, Matt Boyce and Wiki Brown. We meet every fortnight to discuss and create initiatives to better meet the needs of the diverse cultures within our school. If your whānau have any suggestions on how we can better meet these needs, please contact one of us.
This term is very busy, we have the Tongan, Tuvaluan and Chinese Language weeks coming up in September, in which we will be celebrating these languages.
We also have Te Wiki o te Reo (Māori Language Week) in Week 9, where we celebrate te reo Māori with daily kupu, a special assembly and other activities. Our school wide te reo this term has a large focus on Aotearoa’s pūrakau (New Zealand’s legends). Each hub has taken an integrated approach, combining Aotearoa’s history with the legends that were generationally passed down. We are learning kupu that would be used in pūrakau as well as place names and their origins. We are encouraging the senior tamariki to extend and integrate this kupu into their writing where possible.
Our Kapa Haka hine (girls) have been using their break time on a Monday to practice their poi. Along with our weekly practices on a Friday morning. We are hoping to organise a small cultural festival with a few local kura which will show off the hard mahi (work) that our Kapa Haka group do.
Ka kite anō!
