Tui Museum and Gallery Trip

Jean Pearce —

On Tuesday 7th June Mr Bells and Mrs Pearce’s literacy group went on a trip to the museum and art gallery.

Mrs Pearce’s group went to the museum first and Mr Bell’s group went to the art gallery. Mrs Pearce’s group learnt about the Maori culture in the old days. We did two picture cards, and had to find the oldenday object that had the same job as the objects from today. After looking at the two Maori cultures we looked at the carving tools and carvings, we got to feel and touch the tools as well.

After we did that we went to the Discovery Centre, we looked at different types of bones and butterflies and lots more things. Before we left the museum we had time to visit a new exhibition, the Rutherford display. While we were there we did this running thing where you ran as fast as you can to see how many metres you could run per second. There was also a huge inflated yellow ball that you went inside. As you went in it blew wind on your face and there was a multi coloured ball in the centre.

After the museum Mrs Pearce and Mr Bell’s groups swapped. We walked to the art gallery and crossed two crossings and when we got there we found a spot to eat our lunch. We were all really hungry.

After lunch we had a tour around the gallery looking at different types of art related to Maori culture

When we had looked around we were taken into the education centre for an art lesson. We made a waka hui. They are like little paper wakas with a lid. They turned out to be very nice, we started to paint them in the gallery but we ran out of time so we took them back to school to finish.

Finally we caught the bus back to school. We had a great time.

Thank you to the parents and caregivers who participated in this trip also thank you to Dianne and Anthony for showing us around the gallery and museum.

On the following Friday the other boys and girls from Tui had the same trip. We heard they enjoyed it as well.
