Change Makers - Korimako
This term for our Inquiry learning in Korimako, students have been learning about change makers throughout history and how anyone can make a positive change.
Students began by researching famous change makers from recent history. They chose to look into either Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, Mahatma Ghandi or Martin Luther King Jr after a brief introduction about each person. The researched important life events, their inspirations, obstacles, beliefs and much more.
This was a collaborative task and required students to work in teams and divide task to ensure they could met deadlines. They then put an artistic spin on the task and worked on presentation skills. Some students decided to use pastel and dye to great effect.
We are beginning to move this Inquiry into an Arts focus where following our concept of Connections, students will learn about the 'Connection between Activism and the Arts'. Through this, they chose areas of the Arts that they would like to learn more about. These are short film, dance, drama, visual art and rap. Once they have decided on their favourite area, they will create a piece of art that brings awareness to a cause that they are passionate about.
In addition to this, there has been a lot of learning about this topic during literacy and we have seen real life examples of artists being activists.
We look forward to showing our finished art work at our Celebration of Learning.
