Science in Action - Toroa

Kellen Gillstrom —

This Tuesday, Toroa students had the opportunity to share their term's learning on the Scientific Method and their understanding of the many interacting scientific systems of our world.

Students have been building their understanding of the Scientific Method throughout the term, learning about the importance of following a shared methodology/process. Toroa learned about the importance of Questioning, Hypothesising, creating easy-to-follow Procedures, Analysing Results, and writing sound Conclusions with a clear language structure through the process  of completing a series of mini-experiments in the classroom.

Once students had a clear grasp on the scientific method, they were given the opportunity to use it for themselves, leading their own investigation into a clear scientific question of their own making.  After weeks of toil and hard mahi, students had clear results that they were eager to share with the world.

On Tuesday, everyone finally had the chance to share their new understandings and conclusions with the community, inviting the rest of the school through the hub to explore their process and critique their ideas.  From looking at the best way to store Apples to prevent browning, to the effects of age and gender on memory, the whole school was treated to a variety of views on how science fit into their lives.

We can't wait to share our learning with Toroa whānau as they will be invited around for our celebration of learning at the beginning of Term 3.  In the meantime, please have a browse of some of our science boards, and the proud students presenting them, in the gallery below.
