The Wonders of Awa: Exploring Water and Science - Kōtare (Year 5-6)
This term, our integrated learning has focused on the fascinating topic of awa (rivers) and the science of water. We've been exploring how water connects to our lives, our environment, and even the physical world through hands-on experiments.
One of the highlights has been investigating the states of matter – solid, liquid, and gas – and how these transform with heat or cooling. Watching ice melt into water with different ingredients showed us how some materials can make ice melt faster than others. We also had fun using ice water and hot water to inflate and deflate a balloon, showing us how temperature affects air movement.
We also had fun experimenting with density! From floating boats to sinking golf balls, we were surprised that an object's density determines if it sinks or swims. The students were fascinated to see how an object can push water aside to make space for itself.
The tamariki have loved experimenting with water and these activities have allowed us to connect with the critical role water plays in our world. It’s been a splash-tastic term!
