On a Mission to Multiply - Kōtare (Year 5-6)
Kōtare tamariki have been busy finding ways to solve multiplication and division problems based around our science topic of the earth's layers, volcanoes, tectonic plates and rocks.
We have been delving into the world of multiplication and division this term, through problem-solving, timestables practice, games and hands-on grouping.
Tamariki have explored ways to use their known facts to solve complex multiplication problems and they are able to apply this strategy when interpreting word problems based around our science topic.
Showing ways they work out their answers allows everyone in the group to see different ways of thinking and new ways to solve a problem.
Jack told me, "working out problems with my buddy helps me explain my ideas and check if I'm right". Asher has enjoyed multiplying with decimals and he said, "when I look at all the parts of the number and break it up, it's easy to multiply them".
We are proud of the progress the students have made so far this term, especially the Aumangea (perseverance) shown with more complex maths problems.
