Pattern Power - Kiwi (Year 0-1)
What a fantastic few weeks we've had exploring patterns in the Kiwi Hub!
From the moment we began, the tamariki were quick to notice that patterns are all around us — once you start looking, you just can't stop spotting them!
We kicked off our learning using shape blocks, colourful cubes, pop sticks and LEGO to create patterns like red-blue-red-blue or circle-square-circle-square. The children became so confident at recognising what comes next, we moved on to designing our very own repeating patterns. As our understanding grew, so did the complexity of our patterns — we even learned to spot and describe the ‘core’ of each pattern, and began labelling them with letters like A-B-A-B or A-A-B.
Then came a fun twist — we discovered that our bodies can make patterns too! Using body percussion, we explored sound patterns like clap-stomp-clap-stomp and click-click-pat. It was so much fun to create, share, and even modify our musical patterns.
Now we're able to copy, continue, create, and describe repeating sequences! Over the holidays, keep looking for patterns at home – they're everywhere!
