Matariki Celebration Day
We would love to invite you to our Matariki Celebration, Week 8, on Thursday 23rd June from 1pm-3pm.
Kia ora whānau, as you will be aware, we have a new public holiday this year... Matariki! With Covid regulations limiting contact between school and whānau over the last term, Matariki is a welcome reminder for us to reconnect again.
Signified by the Matariki cluster of stars reappearing in our night sky, this is a time to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present, and plan for the year ahead. Matariki is about reconnecting with your home, whānau and community.
We are teaching our tamariki about this holiday and the meaning behind it. To reinforce this, we would love to invite you to join us for some important aspects. Traditionally Matariki was a time when food stores had been built up, which meant more free time for whānau and communities to spend together. People would get together to share kai, kōrero (talk), enjoy ceremonies and entertainment, and look forward to the new year ahead. Manu tukutuku (kites) were also traditionally used to welcome the Matariki stars, as they sail close to the whetū (stars) and connect us and Papatūānuku (the earth) to those that have passed on.
Therefore, we would love for you to come and share kai with us from 1:00 pm-1:30 pm. So bring your tina (lunch), or hop on to myKindo next week to see our kai options. Thanks to Paula Revell 'The Chippy', Brad Stokes-Cassidy 'Sweet As Waffles', as well as our wonderful Jeannie Hood 'Te Rito Cafe', we have a few options for you!
After kai, our Kapa Haka are performing from 1:40 pm -1:55 pm in the hall for all parents to come and enjoy. You will then be invited to share in manu tukutuku (kite) decorating with Kiwi and Pukeko, engage in arts / crafts and games with Tui and Korimako, or join in with Toroa's Matariki art (all located in their hubs or outside). The finish time will be 3:00 pm! We would love to have you there.
