Hub Visits Orana Park! - Pūkeko (Yr 3-4)

Samantha Jones —

This term, our inquiry focus is on the concept of responsibility, particularly exploring how we can take care of ourselves. To kickstart this learning journey, the children had the exciting opportunity to visit Orana Wildlife Park, where they learned about the important roles and responsibilities of zookeepers in caring for animals.

During the visit, the children gained valuable insights into how zookeepers ensure the animals are safe, healthy, and well-cared for. They discovered the various ways zookeepers provide for the animals, including proper food, shelter, medical care, and a secure environment that allows the animals to thrive. The children also made connections between the care animals receive and how these principles can apply to their own lives. They began to understand their own responsibility to stay safe, make healthy choices, and look after their well-being.

Each home group was guided by a knowledgeable staff member, giving the children the chance to explore the park and learn about a variety of animals, such as lions, emus, spider monkeys, keas, rhinos, giraffes, and gorillas. A highlight of the day was feeding the giraffes, giving the children a close-up look at how proper nutrition contributes to an animal’s growth and strength. Additionally, the children were fascinated to learn that a rhino’s horn is made of keratin—the same material found in human hair and fingernails. Throughout the day, the children asked thoughtful questions that deepened their understanding of animal care. Just as animals need the right food and exercise to remain strong, we too must make informed choices about nutrition, hygiene, rest, and staying active to maintain our health and well-being.

The weather was perfect for a day at the park, and the children returned to school filled with excitement, eager to continue exploring the concept of responsibility. A big thank you to all the parents who supported this trip and made it possible. We are grateful for your help in making this experience a success!
