Inquiry - Health and Wellbeing - Kōtare (Year 2)
For Inquiry this term, we have been focusing on the concept of ‘Relationships’ through Health.
Our key understandings for the students were that we are responsible for helping look after ourselves, our body needs different types of food to help us learn and grow, and our body has systems that help us function to be alive.
As part of this Inquiry, we look at how to regulate our emotions through the Zones of Regulation, by recognising our emotions and how we can make positive choices towards ‘Green’ (happy and calm). Also, we had discussions about the ‘Treaty of Waitangi’ and values (Marshland Mana) that are important in the Kōtare Hub. Additionally, we connected the Te Ao Māori model of ‘Te Whare Tapa Wha’ that focuses on the four areas of wellbeing.
We were fortunate to have the ‘Life Education’ as part of our inquiry and we learnt about our body systems and the food that helps us function well. We looked at the respiratory, digestive and circulatory systems in deeper detail in our hub, why they are essential, and how they work. We continued by looking at the different food groups. The children loved making fruit kebabs to understand the fruit and vegetable food group, and butter for the milk products group (dairy).
