2019 BYOC Information update for all whānau.

Paul Tyson —

Please read below regarding changes to our Bring Your Own Device policy from 2019.

Greetings

From 2019 Marshland Schools long established BYOD programme will now be known as BYOC- Bring Your Own Chromebook.

From 2019 all Year 4 students moving into our Year 5-8 BYOC programme will be required to purchase a Chromebook if you choose to provide your child with a device for their learning. It is not mandatory but highly recommended as your child will be using their device daily to support their learning.

If you choose not to buy a device there will be a small number of devices available in the hub however we cannot guarantee daily access to a device for your child. If your child does not have access to a device they still have the option to use pen and paper. Our current uptake of student-owned devices is 90% across Years 5-8.

We are one of approximately 100 schools involved in the Manaiakalani Programme  throughout New Zealand. They test a range of Chromebooks and come up with what they believe is the most robust and reliable device for students to use on a daily basis.

For 2019, they have recommended the ACER C732 Chromebook. We now have a confirmed bundle price of $530.

**The bundle includes; a bag, a 3-year warranty and insurance. The insurance cover is up to 3 years with no excess for accidental damage or loss of your device, including theft.

This special offer is only available through the school. You cannot go into a Noel Leeming store and get this offer over the counter.  While I agree the device itself is dearer it gives you the peace of mind of insurance and accidental damage replacement. Worthwhile when kids are involved!

I want to stress that this is 1 option only.

If you are looking for a Chromebook outside of this deal then do shop around but be aware of the price being too cheap.

Refer to our minimum device requirements on our website. Click Here

Your Chromebook must have 4gb of ram as the 2gb cheaper version is too slow and won’t do the job for the 3-4 years you are expecting to have it.

BYOC in Years 5-8 requires all students buying a device for learning to supply a Chromebook. No other device will be allowed in the hubs.

Students in (Years 5 -8 in 2018) are able to keep using their current device until such time as they leave Marshland or their device needs replacing.

We are phasing out any other devices from 2019.

Acer is a proven brand and is well tested by over 100 schools.

The older ACER C731 (older model) is still a viable option. Harvey Norman-  device only $453. Harvey Norman does not currently stock the C732.

In comparison to our offer the ACER C732 at Noel Leeming is $549 (device only)

At the end of the day, it is what your budget allows. Refer to the BYOC section of our website about minimum specs and do your homework.

As I said above if it’s not a Chromebook then it’s not allowed.

Why are we doing this?
Having a Chromebook allows the school to manage the device, set restrictions, monitor usage and they are reliable. No updates, all day battery and fewer device issues allowing our teachers to teach and your child to learn!

If you are interested in purchasing the ACER C732 through the school then please click this link

With this link, you will fill out a form with your child's details and it will enable you to make your payment through internet banking.

Delivery will be in the New Year. I believe your child will receive a nice certificate under the Christmas Tree telling them their new device will be ready for them to use on the first day of school. This arrangement is out of the school's hands.
