Brilliant Binary - Korimako (Year 5-6)
Students in Korimako have been learning all about how computers work, binary and coding.
Part of Korimako's inquiry this term has been reading and learning about how computers work. Students learned that computers can do many amazing things... but can only read 0s and 1s! They use a code called binary to do this.
Tamariki used their mathematical abilities to investigate binary where they decoded numbers, words and sentences that were written in only 0s and 1s. They were then challenged to create their own numbers and sentences for others to decode.
The final challenge was for ākonga to write their own name in binary and create a bracelet that used binary code to spell this. One colour representing 0 and one colour representing 1. The bracelets looked awesome!
Tamariki showed an amazing amount of aumangea and ako to understand and use this new language that computers use every day and should be proud of what they have achieved and learned. Ask your tamariki how binary works and get them to create any number (up to 255) in binary or to spell out their name.
