Marvellous, Magical, Mathematicians - Kiwi (Year 0-1)
In the Kiwi Hub we have been exploring Numeracy through a wide variety of exciting, engaging experiences that bring our mahi to life!
In Kiwi Gain and Brooks, the tamariki have loved making their own resources to enhance and support their learning. They made their own number cards to use for ordering, reading and playing games to consolidate number knowledge and strategies for problem solving. They have been exploring domino and dice patterns, learning to instantly recognise these and also to combine sets.
Kiwi Roberts and Kiwi Bealing have been focussing on reading and writing whole numbers up to at least 20 and representing them using the ten and one structure of teen and -ty numbers. They have also been having fun with number lines! Using them to solve addition and subtraction problems.
And last but not least, Kiwi Jackson, Kiwi Brown and Kiwi Ngatai have been focussing on learning basic facts through a range of fun, interactive games. The tamariki really shine when they can take on the role of the kaiako, sharing their skills and strategies with their peers.
As part of Strand Maths learning, the Kiwi Hub have been having so much fun with fractions. Just look at those creative cookies cut into perfect pieces! We have been exploring equal and unequal parts, and understanding that a fraction is a part of a whole.
"The essence of Maths is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple". By collaborating, unpacking and exploring, that is what we aim to do. In the Kiwi Hub, we strive to make our Numeracy learning engaging, authentic and meaningful.
