Phenomenal Phonics - Pūkeko (Year 2)
Each morning in the Pūkeko Hub, we begin our learning programme with a structured literacy and phonics session.
During this time, the tamariki engage in phonemic awareness (the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words), review previous learning and learn new spelling rules.
The Pūkeko Hub teachers have been really lucky to engage in some great professional development in Structured Literacy teaching and learning over the last two years and are following a programme called ‘The Code’.
This term, we have learned about rules such as the ’longer spelling of /k/ is -ck’, the floss rule, and the ‘silent e’.
It’s fantastic to see the tamariki recognising and using the rules they have learnt in phonics in their reading and writing, showing the Marshland MANA value of Ako (Learner).
