Te Rito Harakeke - Marshland School believes that the success for every child encompasses academic and social success, as well as physical and mental wellbeing. Health Education will be based on this vision of success for every child, alongside the school's purpose and strategic goals outlined in the School Strategic Plan and the New Zealand Health Curriculum.
The focus of the Health Education programme at Te Rito Harakeke will support tamariki to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to grow and confidently respond to change, new situations or challenges in ways that enhance their interpersonal skills, wellbeing and mana. Marshland MANA values will underpin all aspects of the school's Health programme.
Underpinned by the Principles of Teaching @ Marshland, teachers will engage students in quality, age-appropriate learning in the areas of mental health, sexuality, food and nutrition, body care and physical safety. Through these domains and rich integration with learning across the New Zealand Curriculum, students will develop the understanding, knowledge and competency to promote their own wellbeing and make health-enhancing choices for success, now and in the future.
While there are differing views on teaching relationships and sexuality education, whānau are consulted before anything relating to student physical development and sexuality education takes place. Consultation led by the New Zealand Police also occurs before any teaching related to Keeping Ourselves Safe. This means you will be invited to attend a meeting to gain a perspective and understanding of what will be taught before the programme commences. These topics occur every second year.
