Tangaroa, Kupe and ocean sustainability

Carolyn Davies —

Tangaroa made laws to protect the ocean and it's sea creatures “Tiaki mai i ahau, maku ano koe e tiaki”… If you look after me, then I will look after you…”

Our learning about growth and innovation this term has focused on the issues of ocean sustainability. We have been looking at this through a Māori lens, and have discussed our interconnectedness to the environment, ocean and land.

This video and this illustration by Cliff Whiting, was the inspiration for the student's artwork, showing the battle between Kupe and the giant octopus, Te Wheke a Muturangi.

Students worked in groups of 4 to design and create 4 separate images. These individual images were then put together as a storyboard to depict the story of Kupe and the Giant Octopus.
