Kōrero about Kai - Korimako (Year 5-6)
The Korimako ākonga have been learning to talk about food in Te Reo Māori. Building on from learning about ngā tau (numbers), students are developing the ability to ask and answer questions about kai (food).
We all love our kai and have our favourites so students began by learning the te reo names for various foods. Students found it interesting to make connections to some of the kupu (words) such as kōura (crayfish) as they recognised that kōura is in Kaikōura. Tamariki also noticed that many te reo kupu sounds like the English words such as ti (tea), kawhe (coffee) miti (meat). These are example of adopted words.
Once students had a few kupu under their belts, they were taught to ask 'e hia?' (how many?). They did this by saying phrases like, 'E Hia ngā Āporo?' (How many apples?) and learnt to respond by saying 'Toru ngā Āporo' (Three apples). We have added additional details to their phrases by adding in colour.
Lastly, the learning has been around expressing our favourite foods and explaining why. Shio wrote 'He pai ki ahau ngā heihei hua i te mea kakato' which means his favourite food is chicken because it is delicious.
In the weeks to come, students will be learning ask questions about kai and to say how much kai costs.
