A Writer of the Future
A huge congratulations to Matilda Hutterd now a year 7 student in Toroa who had a story selected and published in the ToiToi journal- Summer issue 30.
With over 2500 writers published so far, ToiToi provides the opportunity for (1) 'young writers to have a piece of work published in the world's longest-running serial publication for children, alongside established and celebrated writers from Aotearoa New Zealand.'
(2) 'Toitoi embraces a wide range of abilities and perspectives, motivating reluctant readers and writers and extending enthusiastic ones. It encourages students to strive for personal excellence and collaborate with their peers.'
An excerpt from Matilda's story- "Naga and the Moon Taniwha, p 45"
The taniwha ruffles her wings and flops sideways onto the grass, displaying her less pretty side. Her ribs strain against her scales and a wound scabs across her left wing. She whimpers and looks up with hungry eyes.
Matilda will have another one of her stories titled 'Pukeko' published in the June 2023 School Journal which is sent to primary schools across New Zealand. You too could have the chance of being a published writer.
(1) 'The submission deadline for the November 2023 School Journals is March 31, 2023. Once again, there is no theme for these journals. That means you will be able to write about anything you like, in any way you like.
