Developing key skills of collaboration, communication and co-operation through artwork as well as reflecting on the significance of Matariki at this time of year.

To celebrate the upcoming Māori New Year, students have been refreshing their knowledge and understanding of the Matariki star cluster and the significance of this time to Māori and NZ culture. This period is traditionally a time of celebration, reflection, and planning for the year ahead.

This is exactly what the year 7 and 8 students are doing as they prepare to celebrate their learning with whānau in Week 10, write their personal reflections for their reports going out in week 9 and identify goals for the rest of the year to come.

It has been wonderful to support the ākonga to reflect on their learning. It's hard to believe that we are already half way through the year! It is so rewarding to see how much growth they have had and progress they have made, emotionally, academically and socially.

Students have been specifically learning how to be collaborative, cooperative and develop good communicative skills. They have been doing this in all areas of learning, and have been given many different opportunities to talk to others, listen to ideas, share and respectfully question the thoughts of others.

As part of the skills involved in collaboration, students have worked together to create some Matariki kites that we will be showcasing next week at the Matariki evening.

Here is sneak peek at the artwork that the ākonga have been working on, we hope to see you at the evening where they will be lit up along with artwork from the other hubs.
