Christchurch East

Sally Kent, Deputy Principal, Christchurch East School —

Christchurch East have had a great start to the year and have been working on a number of areas in relation to the Kahui Ako Goals.

Place Based Learning

  • The Kaitiaki Group have started working with the City Council on the plan for our Red Zone Land. We are looking forward to connecting with the Kahui Ako on this soon.
  • Nature Agents have been measuring and reporting on water quality in a nearby location on the Avon River.
  • Our senior students have begun work with Rekindle through the Creative in Schools Programme.
  • All students from Year 0-5 have been involved in our Nature Education Programme which has involved visits to Ōtākaro Orchard and the green space opposite the school.
  • We are working with Tim Veling from Canterbury University and staff from Tūranga to curate art and stories about our city and our place in it for an exhibition in June.

Transition

  • We are continuing to develop our Play Based Programme and exploring ways to enhance the transition to school for our New Entrant Students.
  • The big focus has been on transitioning into our new learning spaces for the beginning of Term 2.
  • We are continuing with our preschool visits.

Wellbeing

  • We have been exploring staff wellbeing initiatives.
  • A staff capability survey on the delivery of a Positive Education Programme has been completed and we are exploring options with experts for the next step.

Culturally Responsive Practice

  • We are due to have our Cultural Celebration on Friday 16th April which will include a parade to the Cardboard Cathedral for a concert and a shared lunch.
  • We are beginning to work on our school whakapapa by gathering stories of our people and exploring a way in which this could become an ongoing tool in the future
