Successful transitions: pathway into UC

Dale Leckie - In School Kāhui Teacher, Hagley —

Transitioning successfully beyond our educational settings is an important outcome for our kāhui's 'pathways' achievement objective.

The Fast Path into Engineering and Product Design is a new course of study allowing adult learners to streamline their entry into university study.

Twelve dedicated learners are taking part in the course taught by Hagley kāhui teacher Dale Leckie, diving head first into core Level 2 Maths and Physics standards that provide foundational skills for the Engineering and Product Design pathways. Tackling the Physics concepts of Electromagnetism and Mechanics and the Mathematics concepts of Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus in 15 weeks is a big task, but the class has shown they are committed, engaged and able to remain focused throughout the weekly four hour night class. They are yet to have anyone dozing off in those final 30 minutes, the teacher included!  The class also takes part in online learning sessions on Monday and Friday evening, where content is presented as a video conference and students have the opportunity to ask questions and sharpen their skills.

Dale comments that the class has been excellent to teach so far, consistently curious and moving with a tireless pace. The next phase of the Fast Path course begins in early January 2021, where they will be off to the University of Canterbury preparing for their first year of tertiary study.
