New Integrated Studies Programme designed to pathway students to UC

Nathan Walsh - Across School Kāhui Lead, Hagley College —

The 15-week course called ‘Fast Path’ involves students learning Level 2 Maths and Physics Achievement Standards in both online and classroom settings.

Future focused learning and pathways into and out of secondary school are two key kāhui ako achievement challenges for 2020 and 2021. Both of these achievement challenges have been a key part of a new and innovative course at Hagley College this year. Hagley College teacher Dale Leckie has recently completed teaching a new integrated studies programme designed to fast track adult learners into the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Product Design at the University of Canterbury. The 15-week course called ‘Fast Path’ involves students learning Level 2 Maths and Physics Achievement Standards in both online and classroom settings. Learning has been undertaken at a rapid pace and students are able to see their skillset constantly improving. Dale has enjoyed the challenge of teaching online and face to face while preparing adult learners specifically for University:

“I think the online and face to face mix has been great, students can learn from home once per week and they can still get the face to face contact with me and their peers once per week too.”

The next Fast Path course begins in July 2021 and Dale is very much looking forward to getting back into the Physics concepts of Electromagnetism and Mechanics and the Mathematics concepts of Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus next year.
