Learning from Lockdown; new student eLearning induction

Nathan Walsh - Across School Kāhui Teacher, Hagley —

One of the many things learnt from lockdown was the need for students to be well prepared to use technology to support their learning.

Using technology to support learning is an important part of a 21st century education. All students at Hagley College need to be able to use technology as part of their learning as it may assist making connections, facilitating shared learning, assist in the creation of supportive learning environments, and enhance opportunities to learn in different ways. The importance of students being familiar with technology to use it every day for their learning was further highlighted during lockdown earlier in the year.

One of the Kāhui Ako Future Focused Learning projects is to create a robust eLearning induction programme for all students when they begin at Hagley College. Initially this will be for all Year Nine students but will also include older students too. Sarah Parder, Jo Eaton, Naomi Milner, Lesley Cowie and Nathan Walsh are researching and planning a Hagley College specific eLearning induction programme consisting of technical as well as transferrable skill development. The programme will be delivered to all Year 9 students as part of their introduction to school at the beginning of the year. The aim of the eLearning induction is to support students to effectively use Microsoft Teams for learning and to develop their understanding of how to be a good digital citizen, particularly how to self regulate, think critically and communicate effectively.
