Senior Māori and Pasifika Student Academic Mentoring

We have been trialling a mentoring model to help create and establish clear achievement pathways and pathway plans for a group of Māori and Pasifika students at Hagley College. Initially, we looked at different mentoring models, the new Learning Support Delivery Model, and the ‘one plan’ concept of support and academic tracking. The intention has been to create a sustainable structure of support to help establish clear achievement and pathway plans by connecting with students, whānau, and teachers to ensure a shared focus for mentoring and support.

Working along-side the student we created plans that saw each student have access to the following: an IPP (Individual Pathway Plan) academic tracking, learning enhancement support, careers/transitions support, tutor within the College, senior wellbeing modules, counselling services, connection with Te Whare ki Te Puna Wai o Waipapa, Pasifika o Te Puna Wai and subject-specific tutoring or supported study. The work with the students has been highly personalised and varied depending on student needs.

Ultimately, we are hoping to see increased data on the educational aspirations for each student and their whānau including information about the student’s pathway beyond Te Puna Wai o Waipapa (post-school destination), both before and after their transition. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with students in this capacity and with the academic year drawing to a close, it is so exciting to see where our Senior students are heading next! We wish them well and know they’ll be successful in their future endeavours.
