Pathways and Student Leadership in supporting students for learning

Kay, Sarah, Laura, Craig & Megan - The Ao Tawhiti Kāhui Ako Team —

We have such a wonderful group of students who are keen to give time and energy into supporting their peers and younger ākonga with academic tutoring and transitional support within our kura.

Our tutors are underway and this is a great opportunity for our senior students to gain mentoring experience, while guiding others through areas of difficulty in specific subject areas.

Our Peer Support team have a few more training sessions to go, with a particular focus on Strength Based coaching and using the awesome E Tū Tāngata Values, then they will begin mentoring the Year 7 cohort. This will extend to Year 9s later in the year, with a hope that our Peer Support team will continue to grow and expand their presence across a larger range of year groups.

We are welcoming other student leadership ideas from our ākonga, by connecting with student voice. We hope to expand the opportunities that we can offer our young people as they continue on their journey in developing important 21st century skills to transition into future focused learning.

Laura and Sarah are continuing in the Boma Education Fellowship. Their project is pivoting towards the development of an app to support students transitioning into the school and providing them with a way to connect with other students.
