Culturally Responsive Pedagogies - Choiceboards

Nathan Walsh —

Increasing student agency and culturally responsive power-sharing in Science.

One of Rosa Hughes-Currie's kāhui ako goals for this year was to encourage the Science department to work together and share resources to increase student agency and culturally responsive power-sharing. Rosa introduced the concept of choice boards in term four junior Science units for Years Nine and Ten. A choice board is a graphic organizer that allows students to choose different ways to learn about a particular concept.

International educational research has found that perceived ownership from choice supports student engagement. Feedback from science teachers using choice boards this year was generally positive with comments like: “It makes my life easy,” “The students are really engaged for term four” and “Everyone’s sharing all their good resources.” If any other departments would like support to implement a choice board into a unit of work in 2023, please let Rosa know.
