Update from the kāhui team at Christchurch East School

Sally Kent - Deputy Principal, Christchurch East School —

At Christchurch East, we have been working on identifying places in the city that we can visit and use as place-based learning spaces.

We have surveyed our teachers to find out about places they have previously visited and places they would like to visit. As well as this, we have asked about barriers that prevent us from taking visits outside of our school to see how we can find solutions to these.

We have set a goal to include ‘giving back’ to our local community in our school curriculum. With this in mind we have organised activities for Term 4 where teachers organise an activity of their choice and akonga from across the school opt in to their preferred activity.

Longer term, we have been in touch with various people to try and set up a space or activity that can be visited at least weekly by any of our students with a view to contributing to the community.

Under the umbrella of pathways, the school has been working to develop the use of goals based reporting in our Student Management System. We believe that the use of goals will provide a transparent and cohesive pathway to track students progress throughout the school.

The school used the 'Five Ways to Wellbeing' as an overarching theme for our distance learning programme during lockdown and we are exploring ways to further embed that into our school curriculum. Resilience has been identified as an area of need across the school and staff are looking at ways to explicitly teach resilience.
