Designing a student capabilities profile

Jasmine Lambert - Across School Kāhui Lead, Hagley —

How young people view themselves and what they're capable of has an impact on their wellbeing and educational outcomes.

As tamariki and rangatahi move through our ECE’s and kura they develop skills and capabilities that are just as important as the knowledge they gain within our classrooms. These skills can be crucial to positive future outcomes and improved wellbeing. This kāhui-wide project aims to make visible some of these capabilities so that students, their teachers, and whānau have a view of their development and growth in a ‘big picture’, holistic way.

In order to find out more about how people within our kāhui ako think and feel about the potential direction of this project, small groups have been meeting at Chch East, Te Pā o Rākaihautū, Ao Tawhiti, and Hagley College. What’s come through clearly from each of these conversations is the importance of authenticity, links to the distinct values of each ECE and kura, student-centred and strengths-based, and capabilities that align appropriately with each age and stage.

We’re excited to see how this project takes shape and have several ideas about the ways in which we could design and develop a tool or framework to link together and celebrate the increasing range of capabilities of our students as they move through their education. We imagine that this profile of growth might move with the young person as they transition from ECE, to primary, and secondary schooling, and would help us to better meet the needs of each student within our place.
