2019 Learner Placement Update 2*

Nick Gunn —

Our team are currently planning for next year and where our learners will be placed in terms of spaces and whanau teachers. In the following article, we explain how the learning will look in each of the learning landscapes.

* please note that this article was shared via the school app and Linc-ed on Friday 23rd November.

In 2019, we will be using all three Learning Landscapes. Busy Bumbles will continue to operate in Kahikatea with learners accessing the Kopara end of the space.

Here is an explanation of how we will be using each Learning Landscape in 2019.

Kahurangi | Maunga: Learning Through Play

In the Kahurangi | Maunga Learning Landscape, Pātaitai stations are used to structure and support the learning. The stations are prompted by the children’s urges, needs and stages.

Pātaitai runs throughout the day with teachers taking a range of workshops (Literacy, Numeracy, Values) with small groups of children. Learners choose from one of the 24 stations to interact with. The stations are designed for a purpose: cognitive, fine motor, gross motor, cooperative, emotional & language. Stations evolve and develop as needs arise and in response to our learners interests and what is most engaging. We are always aiming to lift the cognitive load of the stations and look at ways to integrate stations into other learning areas. There is purposeful planning to set goals, share learning and time for reflection.

This learning in this space is designed to cater for 5 to 8 year olds, depending on the needs and stage of the child..

Tui | Kereru: Learning Through Projects

In the Tui / Kereru Learning Landscape, play transitions into children focussing on longer term project interests. Stations are based on children’s passions, urges, needs and stages and children use the stations to develop a project interest through a LEARN, CREATE, SHARE process. Literacy, Numeracy, other curriculum areas e.g. science and our school values are all workshopped through those projects and stations, and in targeted toolbox workshops. Some projects are team-wide and focus on areas the children have not yet experienced. There is purposeful planning to set goals, share learning and time for reflection.

The learning in this space is designed to cater for 7-10 year olds, depending on the needs and stage of the child.

Kopara: Learning Through Passions

In the Kopara Learning Landscape, passions are used to structure and support the learning. The learning is prompted by the children’s passions, strengths and interests.

Passion based learning runs throughout the day building upon the LEARN, CREATE, SHARE process. Learners are guided by the teachers and taught how to apply the literacy and numeracy skills they have acquired into real world situations. Learners are supported to develop their Learning Dispositions by challenging themselves to deepen their learning, collaborating with others (both within school and the wider community), being creative by trying new approaches to get things done, innovation, and invention and connecting to their learning, their peers, their interests and their world. There is purposeful planning to set goals, share learning and time for reflection.

This learning in this space is designed to cater for 9 to 13 year olds, depending on the needs and stage of the child..

In Week 8 of the term , we will share information around which learning landscape your child will be in and who their whanau teacher will be.

Learners will have the opportunity to participate in learning experiences with their new whanau group and whanau teacher before the end of the year.
