Nick's Notes 22nd March

Nick Gunn —

Good afternoon families. It has been another exciting week of learning at LWG. Thanks to Pip for organising our PALs (Playground Activity Leaders) pictured above. A great example of Tuakana Teina in action.

This morning, whanau groups will be talking about and practising what to do in the event of an earthquake: “drop, cover & hold”. You might like to follow this up by talking about what you do at home in an emergency.

This week, I have observed some powerful learning in the Tui & Kereru Learning Landscape:

Korowai - The Tui/Kereru learners have been working hard this term to complete their personal korowai. They have designed and created a korowai each based around their family, interests, culture and what is important to them. These look fantastic and we are very proud of the effort our learners have put into them. Check out Ella's korowai in the pictures below.

Sculptures- During enrichment, Pip's art group were introduced to sculpture. They have been working hard to design and create a sculpture made out of wood, wire, panty hose, PVA glue and paint. The overall look is extremely effective, please feel free to come into the learning space and view these. In the meantime, you can see Jamiya's sculpture below.

In between workshops*  in the Tui&Kereru landscapes, students have been working on their FIPs (first important priority) - a selection of independent tasks to support their learning which are carried out across the week. Please ask your Tui/Kereru learner about their FIP!

*(instructional sessions with a teacher in small groups for maths and reading/writing).

Here is a link to a National Radio Interview with Jordan Peterson, a clinical psychologist and University of Toronto professor. In this interview, Jordan discusses his book 12 Rules for Life. The rules cover everyday issues including negotiating hierarchies, managing arguments and parenting. This is a thought provoking article and well worth listening to.

We have been working with Ezra from Dances for Schools to organise their team to deliver a series of workshops in Term 4. In February, Ezra ran a free demonstration session for our learners which they loved. There will be a cost for these workshops which we will communicate with you closer to the time. In the meantime, please follow this Link to learn more about the programme.

Our thoughts and best wishes  are with Jana who had a bereavement in her family this week. The staff and Board sent flowers and a card to her whanau. Jana will be back on Wednesday.

Have a great weekend everyone.
